Diomedes was the great Argive hero whose exploits in the Trojan War are recounted in Book V of the Illiad, including his wounding of Aeneas by hurling a large rock at him. Aeneas only survived through the intercession of Aphrodite and Apollo.

In the post Homeric sagas, Diomedes and Odysseus raid Troy and carry off the sacred Palladion. There are several versions of the theft of the Palladion from Troy including Vergil who relates that Aeneas brought it with him to Rome after fleeing Troy.
