Constantine IX, 1042-1055 A.D.
AR Concave Miliaresion, 2.88g. 30mm. Constantinople mint. Virgin orans standing on dais wearing tunic and maphorium. Rv. Emperor standing wearing scale armor, a long cloak fastened at the neck with a circular brooch, and crown with cross and pendilia; he holds long cross in r. hand and sheathed sword in l. hand. DO 7a. Sear 1834. This is the large module variety of fine style with an elegant slender figure of the Virgin. This example has attractive old collection toning and superb metal quality with none of the usual defects found on this issue. A wonderful example of high Byzantine numismatic art.
The unusual inscription continues from obverse to reverse and reads,"O Lady, preserve the pious Monomachus." This device was also employed for a special protective inscription on the large silver coins of Romanus III with the Virgin Hodegetria type.
