Uncertain Germanic Tribes
AV Solidus, 4.44g. 21mm. Uncertain Germanic Tribes, in the name of Theodosius II( 402-450 A.D.) of Constantinople mint. DH THEOO S(retrograde) IV S(retrograde) P F AVG. Three-quarter facing bust of Theodosius wearing cuirass and plumed helmet; he carries shield emblazoned with horseman device and spear over shoulder. Rv. IIP XXXXII COS XVII PP; CONOB in ex. Constantinopolis seated to left holding globus cruciger in right hand and scepter in left hand; shield to right and star in field to left. Cf. CNG 72: 2006, 2266. Cf. Hunter V, 483,18 ("rough work"). An interesting early imitative issue by one of the Germanic tribes; the crudity of the style and particularly of the inscriptions marks this as a non-Imperial issue. The exact tribal attribution from this period of migration is still uncertain
