55872 | 1 | Bar Kokhba, Zuz overstrike, ex: Samel collection AR Zuz, 3.30g. 19mm. Undated, attributed to year 3=134/135 A.D. Overstruck on a denarius of Vitellius(?). Paleo-Hebrew, "Simon" within wreath . Rev. Paleo-Hebrew, "For the freedom of Jerusalem." One-handled fluted jug; laurel branch to right. Mildenberg 104.7(this coin listed). Hendin 1422. Meshorer 283a. Toned. This is quite an unusual overstrike. On the reverse there is the typical low relief under-type showing the outline of a head. In addition there is a high relief and well defined eye, nose, mouth, and chin that is under the ribs of the vase. The host coin was probably struck twice or with a glancing blow in order to have the under-type visible in two reliefs. The undertype appears to be a denarius of Vitellius, but it is not a certain attribution. Pedigree/Provenance: Ex: Josef Samel collection, published by Meshorer and Overbeck, Das Heilige Land. Antike Münzen und Siegel aus einem Jahrtausend jüdischer Geschichte, Exhibition catalog, Staatliche Münzsammlung München in cooperation with the Israel Museum Jerusalem, Munich 1994. no. 466. good Very Fine/about Extremely Fine |
