AE 24, 11.43g. Macrinus, 217-218 A.D. Laureate head of Macrinus to right. Rv. Poseidon holding trident and dolphin standing in the center of a hexastyle temple; two dolphins and a statue decorate the pediment; stairs lead to the temple. BMC 167. Brown patina. An exceptional style portrait in remarkable quality. This coin has an unquestionable attribution to the collection of Sir Arthur Evans. Evans' coins were sold in many auctions, but generally as part of larger sales where lots from his collection were not specified. In this case, the 1934 Naville sale groups Evans' Roman coins into a designated section of the catalog.
