Ancient Coins: DARK AGE GOLD: Ostrogoths, Theoderic, 493-526 A.D.
AV Solidus, 4.44g. 19mm. Rome mint. Theoderic in the name of Anastasius. D N ANASTASIVS P F AVG. Facing bust, slightly turned, wearing cuirass and helmet and carrying spear and shield. Rev. VICTORIA AVCCC theta; CONOB in exegue. Victory standing to left holding jeweled cross; star in field to right. Metlich 6 var. Fagerlie 691ff var. A few light scratches or graffiti in fields and some minor edge marks.
This is an unpublished variant with a theta at the end of the reverse inscription indicating Theoderic, but without the usual Rome monogram in the field. Lustrous and with an exceptionally detailed Victory. Possibly unique.
