Ancient Coins: MEDIEVAL: Italy, Padua, Cavino medal
AE Struck medal by Giovanni da Cavino, 32.25g. 40.5mm. 1540. Marcantonio Contarini, 1485-1548. M ANTONIVS CONTARENVS. Draped bust to left. Rev. PATAVIVM; MDXL in exergue. Personification of Padua holding cornucopia and scales; she is seated to the left on a curiass and shields; her right foot rests on a helmet. Cessi 11. Lawrencee 88. Toderi and Vannel 939. Basel I.6 var.(smaller diameter). Choice original example with fine dark brown patina.
Marcantonio Contarino was from a noble Venetian family and was called the "Philosopher". He was podesta of Vicenza from 1527-1530 and later of Padua in 1540 when this medal was struck. He was also an ambassador under Charles V and and Pope Paul III. He was named Duke of Candia in Crete in 1548.
