AR Denarius, 3.92g. 18mm.  Messana mint.  [MAG PIVS IMP] ITER.  Bare head of Pompey the Great to right; jug behind; lituus in front.  Rev.  [PRAEF CL]AS ET OR[AE MAR] IT EX S C.  Neptune holding aplustre and with foot on prow flanked by the Catanaean brothers carrying their fathers.  CR 511/3a, Syd. 1344.  Sear, Imperators  334. RBW 1785.   Lovely deep old cabinet toning; usual short flan and weak strike on edge but an exceptional portrait of fine style in high relief.
