Ancient Coins: BYZANTINE GOLD: Eudocia, Michael VII, Constantius, 1067 A.D.

AV Histamenon Nomisma, 4.40g. 26.5mm.   Christ enthroned wearing nimbus and holding Book of Gospels in left hand; his right hand is raised in benediction.  Rev.  Eudocia standing on dais in center wearing loros and crown with pinnacles and pendilia;  she holds a knobbed scepter.  She is flanked by Michael on her left and Constantius on her right; they each wear loros and crown and hold globus cruciger and akakia.  DOC 1. Fueg 1.V2. Sear 1857.  Lustrous and with an exceptional strike.

This issue was struck for a limited period between May and December of 1067 following the death of her husband Constantine X and her marriage in 1068 to Romanus IV.  During this brief period Eudocia reigned as Augusta as well as regent for her younger sons who are depicted on the coin.
